Descendants of Joseph Roberts
Roberts' Reunion

Joseph Roberts, born December 6, 1797, in North Carolina, later moved to middle Tennessee and had 6 sons and 4 daughters.  Today, there are over 3000 documented descendants of Joseph Roberts.  Every 4th Saturday in June, the Roberts Family holds a reunion at the Boma Community Center in Boma, Tennessee.  The Boma Community Center stands on the property where the Boma School once stood.  Many descendants of Joseph Roberts attended that school.

In 2003, we celebrated the 16th annual reunion.  This reunion was brought about by the efforts of Howard Roberts, Velma (Roberts) Phillips, Carlos Herren, and others to enable the extended family to get together, renew old acquaintances, and learn about each other.  It was also brought about by the desire and need to reclaim and/or maintain multiple cemeteries where our fore fathers were buried.  Markers and headstones were needed for some of the graves.  It was the desire of Clavis Roberts to mark all the graves that had no headstones while there were people still alive who had the information needed to do so.  Along with his son, Tommy, many a day, weekend, vacation, and other available times were dedicated to this end.  Today, through the efforts and contributions of Joseph Roberts' descendants, many of the unmarked graves now have headstones, some cemeteries have been cleaned, others have been fenced, roads have been improved, and tours of the cemeteries are available during the reunions.

At the reunions we have dinners with food provided by some of the greatest cooks around, all on a volunteer basis.  It is a covered dish or pot luck dinner (that's the noon meal).  As one Pastor put it, "Bring a covered dish with something in it that is good to eat!"  He did this after one member brought a covered dish to a dinner with nothing in it.  When asked why she brought just a covered dish, she replied "That's what you asked us to bring!"

It has grown to be a tradition at the reunion to present to family members a jar of home-made jelly or jam who are the winners of various categories.  These include, the one who traveled the greatest distance, the one with the most (Roberts) family members present, the oldest, the youngest, and this year to the most recently married couple.

In 2000, a book chronicling the Descendants of Joseph Roberts was made available by Tommy Roberts.  Thanks to his and all the contributors' efforts, literally covering many years, this record and genealogy of the Joseph Roberts family was made possible.

Come out and help us make the next Descendants of Joseph Roberts Reunion the best Roberts Reunion yet.  It is held on the 4th Saturday of June every year at the Boma Community Center in Boma, Tennessee!
